A Houston global civic organization has named Texas Tech University System Regent John Walker as its international citizen for 2014.
The World Affairs Council of Houston honored Walker, a Lubbock native now living in Houston, as the Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs International Citizen.
According to a news release, Walker was honored for his contributions to Houston's international life.
Most recently, the announcement says, Walker participated in a mission trip to Zambia to build schools and mentor orphaned children.
Walker, a 1968 graduate of Texas Tech, is president and chief executive of EnerVest, which owns some $8 billion in gas and oil properties, and executive chairman of EV Energy Partners, a publicly traded limited partnership.
Gov. Rick Perry appointed Walker to the Texas Tech board of regents in January 2012. His term expires in January 2015.
