Botox maker Allergan Inc. will lay off 557 workers from its Irvine headquarters effective June 4, according to a notice filed earlier this month with the California Employment Development Department.
In July 2014, the pharmaceutical company announced it would shed 1,500 jobs in an attempt to fend off a hostile bid from Quebec-based Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
This month’s notice brings the total number of jobs cut since then to 1,491, nearly all in Irvine. Allergan’s Goleta and Carlsbad offices cut 134 and 40 positions, respectively, in the last quarter of 2014.
In November, Allergan agreed to sell itself to Dublin, Ireland-based Actavis PLC. The $70.5 billion friendly cash and stock deal closed in March.
