NYPD investigates possible suicide at Mount Loretto state park in Pleasant Plains

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Police are investigating a possible suicide near the entrance to Mount Loretto state park in Pleasant Plains.

A 911 call summoned police to the park's Hylan Boulevard entrance Monday evening, where officers found a 57-year-old man, unconscious and unresponsive, who had been shot in the head, according to an NYPD spokesman.

The man was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Police have not yet released his name.

Though an investigation is ongoing, police are looking into the possibility that the man shot himself, and officers recovered a firearm on the scene, the NYPD spokesman said.

One police source familiar with the investigation said a suicide note also had been recovered.
