Locals win Doug Opel's holiday run

A few local runners were the first to cross the finish line in their respective races in Thursday's Doug Opel's Run for the Kids event.

Ben Barenstein of Waldo was the top-finishing male runner in the 10-kilometer run (he finished in 37 minutes, 48 seconds), while Kohler native Sarah Leick was the fastest female across the 10K line (41:37).

Mark Manz of Kiel was the fastest male in the 2-mile run (11:29), while Sheboygan's Emily Gapinski was the quickest female in that run (12:48).

The Hanlon family, meanwhile, won the "Family Flock" award with 30 entrants.

More than 1,850 runners and walkers participated in the 37th annual YMCA Thanksgiving Day event, which raises money for the YMCA Partner with Youth programs.

Complete results weren't immediately available to Sheboygan Press Media on Thursday.
