Athletes Away: North grad Damkot nets WIAC honors

After helping the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team over the weekend, Sheboygan North High School graduate Trevor Damkot was honored as one of five nominees for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Award.

Damkot finished third at the UW-Oshkosh Open on Friday at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, and in so doing helped the Titans finish third as a team.

The freshman finished the 8,000-meter race in 26:41, finishing behind Wisconsin Track Club's Alexander Rink (26:22) and UW-Whitewater's Dawson Miller (26:05) and ahead of 56 other competitors.

• With the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championships being held this weekend, Howards Grove native and Manitowoc Lutheran High School graduate Steve Van Alstine is set to compete for Wisconsin Lutheran.

The senior has competed in all six of the Warriors' meets and posted a pair of personal-bests — first at the Tom Barry Invite in late August where he finished the four-mile race in 26:50 and also in the late September Brissman-Lundeen Invite where he posted a time of 30:58 on the 8,000-meter rout.

As a junior he competed in five events and was an NACC Scholar Athlete, running a season-best 31:13.66 8K at the NACC Championships, a season-best 26:29.3 four-mile and a career-best 19:47 5K.

Competing in six events as a sophomore, Van Alstine was an NACC Scholar Athlete.

2012 (Sophomore): Competed in six events ... Ran a personal-best 8K October 27 at the NAC Championships (29:59.40) ... Posted a person-best four-mile time of 24:50.1 September 1 at the Tom Barry Invitational ... NAC Scholar-Athlete.

2011 (Freshman): Competed in four events ... Ran a personal-best 8K (33:43) in final event of the season at the NAC Championships October 29 ... Completed the Warrior Invitational in 33:57 October 1.

Men's Soccer

The regular season for Wisconsin Lutheran came to a close on Wednesday against Lakeland College with a pair of locals competing on Senior Night for the Warriors.

Brad Mallmann, a 5-foot-10-inch midfielder and Plymouth High School graduate has played in all 18 games for Lutheran this season, notching a pair of goals on 11 shots in 13 starts.

The Business Administration major also started 18 games last year and finished with 25 shots — 11 on goal — and one goal and three assists.

As a sophomore Mallmann started 16 of 19 games and tied for second on the team with six goals en route to being named an NACC Scholar Athlete. He started five of 17 games as a freshman, finishing with 10 shots — three on goal.

Nathan Joosse, a senior Mathematics and Business Administration major and Oostburg High School graduate, has appeared in five games at defender for the Warriors.

The 5-foot-10-inch, 160-pounder made two starts and played in 11 games as a junior and had two shots and one goal to go along with his NACC Scholar Athlete honor.

As a sophomore he played in seven games, registering one shot and nabbing an NACC Scholar Athlete Award.

Despite not playing a game as a freshman, Joosee was an NACC Scholar Athlete that season as well.

Football

Seven games into the regular season the Wisconsin Lutheran football team is benefiting from the production of two former local players.

James D'Angelo, a junior defensive lineman and Ozaukee High School graduate, has recorded 10 solo tackles and eight assists, as well as one sack and 2½ tackles for loss.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 245-pound Psychology major started nine of 10 games last season and accumulated 14 tackles — nine solo, five assisted— and a pair of sacks. As a freshman, D'Angelo played in three games.

Also on the team is junior wide receiver Tim Grimes, a 5-foot-10-inch Random Lake High School graduate majoring in History.

Grimes has not appeared in a game this season after appearing in one last season when he was named a NACC Scholar Athlete.

The Warriors (4-3, 2-1 NACC) will play at Rockford on Saturday at noon.

• It was recently announced that Spencer Jacque, a 5-foot-10-inch junior linebacker for UW-Whitewater, has been selected as the Warhawks Defensive Player of the Week for his six-tackle performance in Whitewater's 37-0 road win over UW-Stout earlier this month.

The Cedar Grove-Belgium High School graduate has 17 tackles and a sack this season for the Warhawks.

Other locals on the team include freshman Plymouth High School graduate and offensive lineman Jordan Mueller, Ozaukee High School graduate and freshman wide receiver Steve Street, Sheboygan South High School graduate and sophomore linebacker Riley Tutas and freshman kicker/punter and Sheboygan Falls High School graduate Will Meyer.

Mueller has played in a pair of games and Tutas has made six appearances and notched six tackles.

Meyer is 6-of-7 on field goals with a long of 38 yards in five games.

Men's Golf

The Fall season came to an end for Wisconsin Lutheran recently with Cedar Grove-Belgium High School graduate TJ Obbink completing his junior season with the Warriors.

The Biology major finished with a 14-over total with his scores improving throughout the season.

After finishing tied for 74th and tied for 58th with a 30-over and 24-over in Lutheran's first two competitions, Obbink tied for 33rd, 16th and 22nd over his final three rounds, including a 20-over and a pair of 13-overs.

The spring season will kick off at 1 p.m. on March 29 at the Gorlok Spring Invitational in Eureka, Mo.

As a sophomore Obbink competed in eight rounds with an average of 88½ strokes, including a season-best round of 84.

Women's Golf

Sheboygan North High School graduate and UW-Whitewater senior SammieLeibham's fall season with the Warhawks came to an end recently with the veteran tying for a team best with an average stroke count of 84.8 for those competing in all six of the team's events.

Twice during the season Leibham had the Warhawks' best individual score.

The past two seasons Leibham has garnered All-WIAC second team honors.
