Updated with the names of Oregon's other finalists.
Aditya Jain, a freshman at Westview High School, took first place in the technology category at the 2014 Broadcom MASTERS National Science Fair in Washington D.C. on Oct. 28.
Jain was the only student from Oregon to take a top honor at the competition. The two grand prizewinners hailed from California.
Jain was among four students from across the United States awarded $3,500 for winning their categories. His research on an automated diagnostic tool for lung cancer solitary pulmonary nodules is titled, It's a Matter of Life & Breath: An Improved Automated Diagnostic Tool for Lung Cancer Solitary Pulmonary Nodules Detection towards Population Based Screening.
Oregon sent four finalists to the national competition - out of 30 across the nation - including Aditya Sivakumar, who attends Beaverton High. He was a member of a team at the competition that received the Team prize. Arnob Das and Leo Deng also finalists, attend Jesuit High.
All of the students met top executives at the White House and shook hands with President Barack Obama.
Stoller Middle School, where Jain started his project with the help of eighth-grade science teacher Nick Badyrka, will receive $1,000.
Sivakumar's project was titled, "An Acoustical Investigation of Western Classical Music Theory"
Das's project was, "A Novel Biocompatible Medical Implant Material"
Deng's project was, "Development of Forest Fire Prediction Tool for the State of Oregon
The Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) program helps middle school students translate a personal interest into a passion for science, engineering and innovation and encourages them to continue studying science and math through high school.
