QUEENS, NY (PIX11) — The incident involving Delta Flight 1086 Thursday is the latest in a long history of problems at LaGuardia.
In September 1989, US Air Flight 5050 crashed while taking off. Two passengers were killed and 15 were injured when the plane ran off the end of the runway and into Bowery Bay. It was a wet day with low visibility.
In March 1992, a US airplane crashed into Flushing Bay just after takeoff. 27 people died on that flight. Ice on the wings and failed procedures for de-icing planes were the cause of that crash.
Most of us have 2009’s Miracle on the Hudson in recent memory — another accident that happened after takeoff from LaGuardia. The US Airways jet splash-landed in the Hudson after both engines failed. It wasn’t the weather that time — but birds. A flock of Canada geese were sucked into the engines.
In 2013, the landing gear on a Southwest Airlines jet collapsed on landing. The plane veered off the runway and into the gress. 16 people were hurt in that accident.
