Severino Gonzalez called up to Phillies, Phillippe Aumont to start Sunday for Lehigh Valley IronPigs

Before Severino Gonzalez's first career Triple-A start two weeks ago, Lehigh Valley IronPigs manager Dave Brundage said he didn't sense any nerves from the 22-year-old.

His next start might be a little different.

The Panama native will get the ball Tuesday for the Philadelphia Phillies in St. Louis, manager Ryne Sandberg announced Saturday night.

Through three starts, Gonzalez has been the IronPigs' strongest pitcher, going 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 17.2 innings. He has struck out nine while walking only two.

Gonzalez didn't seem to be fazed by his first start in Triple-A, as he took a shutout into the sixth inning and left after 6.2 innings with only one earned run to his name.

"You can just kind of tell makeup wise," Brundage said after that game. "He loves to pitch and it shows out there on the mound."

Gonzalez allowed five runs in five innings during his next start at Buffalo, but rebounded with six innings of one-run ball in his last outing against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Phillies will need to make a move to add Gonzalez to the 40-man roster before Tuesday's game. The last time through the rotation, they used Dustin McGowan as a spot starter for a bullpen game.

Gonzalez was originally scheduled to pitch Sunday for the IronPigs, but that duty will now go to Phillippe Aumont, Brundage said.

It will be Aumont's first start since 2010 at Single-A Clearwater.

Aumont said earlier this month that he was excited about the potential of getting back in the starting rotation, as he was being stretched out for long relief situations.

Now, his opportunity will come Sunday against Buffalo at Coca-Cola Park.

In 12 innings this season, Aumont has allowed just two earned runs, striking out 12 and walking eight.
