A man has been hospitalised after he was shot in the face during a row near a memorial for a stabbed teen.

The victim was hurt when ‘disorder’ broke out near floral tributes for 19-year-old Sheriff Mbye in the early hours.

A window was also smashed as the violence erupted in Northfield Birmingham at around 1.30am.

Shazad Khan, owner of Ozzy's fast food restaurant, said: "Last week there was a stabbing now there's a shooting," reported the Birmingham Mail.

"The area's becoming more and more dangerous. We have been here for a year and things have been fine but in the last month it's been turned upside down for everyone."

An eyewitness said he saw youths running from the scene at around 1am.

He told local local reporter Josh Layton: "One of them threw himself into the back of the van, its doors were shut and he literally ran straight into it.

"Then there was a puff of smoke and they ran back the way they had come towards the memorial."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police confirmed the man suffered a gunshot wound to the face but that he was made his own way to hospital and is in a stable condition. No arrests have yet been made.

Chief Superintendent Chris Todd, from Birmingham Police, said: “We understand that this is a concerning incident for local people in the area and we have detectives working around the clock to find out what happened and locate those involved.

"At this stage this appears to have been a targeted attack and I want to reassure the community that there is no immediate risk to members of the public."

Flowers have gathered at the site since the teenager was stabbed last Friday.

But some locals claim it is becoming a meeting place for youngsters causing trouble.

Facebook user Denise Sanders said: "This memorial has caused nothing but an uneasy feeling around Northfield this past week with hundreds visiting this site, illegally parking and hanging around, which they have now made into some kind of shrine.

"After last night's/this mornings incident I suggest we remove this site from our town and have the mourners place it elsewhere.

"That way we can have some kind of guarantee that these incidents will not recur on our doorsteps but on the ones of those who cannot be trusted in society!!!"
