Govt to go tough on funding militancy
The government will take stern action against any bank found guilty of funding militancy, says State Minister for Finance M Abdul Mannan.
“If we get specific allegation against any bank, we will take action against it following an investigation,” he told parliament yesterday.
The state minister was replying, on behalf of Finance Minister AMA Muhith, to a query from Whip Shahiduzzaman Sarker during a question-answer session.
Shahiduzzaman in his question had alleged some identified banks, including Islami Bank Bangladesh, finance militancy and anti-state activities in the name of Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).
“The CSR activities have been suspended as Bangladesh Bank has been working to formulate a specific guideline to bring transparency in CSR activities,” said Mannan.
Responding to another query, the state minister claimed despite BNP-Jamaat alliance's violent activities, country's economy was on the right track.
“The government will be able to achieve its [economic] target facing all obstacles,” he said.
After another question, Mannan said the looting of public money by controversial multilevel marketing (MLM) company Destiny put a negative impact on the economy.
“All the property of Destiny is being confiscated through legal measures. The government has decided to return the money to the affected ones after selling the property,” he said.
The state minister also said that some 10 banks made a Tk 10,500 crore profit in the last financial year. Of those, Standard Chartered profited Tk 1742. 32 crore and it was the highest by a bank.
