It appears that fans who have let their subscriptions lapse may finally be able to get back into World Of Warcraft, although with some restrictions.
Data miners over at MMO-Champion recently dove into the explicit details of the upcoming 6.1 patch for World Of Warcraft, which is currently in PTR. If you scroll through until the ‘new strings’ category appears, you will notice there are several new strings of code that have been implemented. Several of these codes reference the ‘starter edition,’ also known as the ‘trial edition,’ which lets you play until level 20 for free. The new ‘veteran edition’ is referenced several times and has the same limitations that are found in the trial edition.
This is all just a rumor and may end up never coming to fruition. Since the data itself came in a recent patch, this could just mean that Blizzard is merely ‘thinking’ about this and may never come to light. Take this with a grain of salt, but if it does happen it could turn WoW into a ‘buy to play’ type of game like Star Wars: The Old Republic, where you can play in a ‘free to play’ manner. However, don’t expect to have new experiences past a certain yet-to-be revealed level. If this is what Blizzard has in mind, they are sure to have a few people like myself who would be interested to return to see if the game has changed enough to warrant a re-subscription.
