On Tuesday, President Obama vetoed a bill that would have approved the Keystone XL pipeline. The company behind the project, TransCanada, said it remains firmly committed to construction of the north-south pipeline for oil from Canadian oil sands, despite the president's action.

But apart from the political controversy, some wonder whether, with recent drops in oil prices, the project continues to make economic sense. The pipeline would cost billions of dollars and target the third-largest proven oil reserve in the world.
