High school robotics teams add to awardsHigh school-level FIRST Robotics Competition teams competed April 10-12 at the Pacific Northwest FRC Championship contest in Portland. FRC is the highest level of play in For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, a national nonprofit.
Lynnwood High School’s Royal Robotics Team 2522 took the District Championship Chairman’s Award, one of the competition’s most prestigious honors. They won the same award at a Snohomish event in March. The team is now ranked ninth overall in Pacific Northwest district play.
Both the Lynnwood team and the M*A*S*H Team 4077 from Edmonds-Woodway High School, also in the Edmonds School District, are raising funds to travel to the FIRST World Championships later this month in St. Louis. The Edmonds Public Schools and Alumni Foundation will match up to $2,500 in donated funds. To help, visit edmondspsf.org.
Meanwhile, the Arlington High School NeoBots Team 2903 won the Engineering Inspiration Award at a March 21-22 district tournament at Shorewood High School. The Edmonds-Woodway team won the Imagery Award at the same event.
At an earlier event in Mount Vernon, the Glacier Peak Sonic Squirrels Team 2930 from Snohomish won the Team Spirit Award, and the Lynnwood team won the Excellence in Engineering and Entrepreneurship awards.
Garden club helps school projectsThe Mill Creek Garden Club recently awarded $2,100 in Giving Through Gardening grants to four Everett School District elementary schools for projects that involve students and promote gardening, civic beautification and sound horticultural practices.
Cedar Wood Elementary will use the grant to enrich soil and plant vegetables in six existing raised beds, purchase more gardening tools, and add trellises and a compost tumbler. Students grow veggies to donate to the local food bank.
Forest View Elementary will use its grant for potting soil, flowering plants, herbs and large flat rocks to create a butterfly garden.
Penny Creek Elementary will use its grant in combination with another grant to buy three 40-gallon rain barrels, several urban water test kits, and drip irrigation soaker tubing. Students will then monitor rainfall, test water for sediment and chemicals, and use reclaimed water to irrigate plants.
Woodside Elementary students are studying declining bee populations in a pollinator garden with various kits, activities and computer software.
Students work against bullyingTeachers, staff and students at Granite Falls Middle School this year have focused on an anti-bullying message.
Students in Tiger Media classes added their talents by creating video public service announcements. Students came up with each storyboard as well as cast and produced the videos.

State Achievement winners namedThirty-five Snohomish County schools were among 413 statewide to be named 2013 Washington Achievement Award winners on April 14.
The Washington Achievement Award, sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education, recognizes top-performing schools in six categories: Overall Excellence, High Progress, Reading Growth, Math Growth, Extended Graduation Rate (awarded to high schools and comprehensive schools only), and English Language Acquisition.
“So many schools in our state are doing good work to make a difference for kids,” state Superintendent Randy Dorn said. “These awards represent some of the best.”

Mill Creek teen going to GermanyPaul Schastlivets, a student at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek, has been awarded a scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year and will join a group of 50 American high school students sponsored by ASSE International Student Exchange Programs who will live with a host family and attend high school in Germany for the academic year.
As a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship recipient, Paul will live with a German host community, attend school, participate in community life and learn about the German country and culture.
Rotary honors Everett studentsThe Rotary Club of Everett recently honored students Jessica Holsopple of Cascade High School, Allegra Bozorth of Everett High School and Jessica Turner of Archbishop Murphy High School as its Students of the Month for April.
Honored as Students of the Month for March were Logan DuBois of Cascade High, Alexandra Dedrick of Everett High and Keegan McAdam of Archbishop Murphy.
Rotary honors Lynnwood studentsThe Alderwood Terrace Rotary sponsors the Career and Technical Student of the Month program at Lynnwood High School. Honored for March was Patrick Hovell, a senior in the fire service and horticulture programs. Honored for April was Julianna Brutman, a junior studying biotechnology and sports medicine.
South Everett students laudedArnela Grebovic of Mariner High School, Rachel Straughn of Cascade High School and Samantha Harper of Mariner High School were all recently honored as Students of the Month by the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary.
Granite Falls students help OsoThe leadership class at Granite Falls High School made two giant posters that students and community members then signed with messages of support for the victims of the Oso mudslide. A photo taken by cheerleaders was attached to both posters, which were then taken to Post Middle School in Arlington and the Darrington Community Center. The school also collected over $1,700 in two days to donate to the American Red Cross.
Edmonds district receives honorsThe Center for Human Services recently awarded the Edmonds School District its 2014 Dorrit Pealy Award. The award is given annually to an individual and organization that provides their community with outstanding support. It is given in honor of Dorrit Pealy, who was a Center for Human Services founding board member.
Meanwhile, the Chamber Arts and Culture Committee presented its annual awards at a recent reception. Among the recipients was the school district’s Music, Visual and Performing Arts Department in partnership with the Rotary Club of Edmonds Daybreakers, receiving the Creative Collaboration Award for the Edmonds Jazz Connection.
