CALGARY – A woman remains in hospital following a bizarre incident on Sunday night that could have killed her.
She was driving a quad down Deerfoot Trail but the dangerous ride started much earlier, south of the city.
Kassidy Cobbe spotted the driver swerving in and out of traffic around 1:30 p.m., southeast of Calgary.
Cobbe says the quad had a spare jerrycan strapped to the back and the driver was wearing a helmet.
“In and out, going about 80 clicks on a quad on the highway near Calgary doesn’t happen very often. Then go in the ditch and back on the highway, in the ditch and back on the highway, just all over the place right,” Cobbe said.
“I imagine it was very scary for the people headed east,” Cobbe said.
Cobbe called police to alert them about the incident.
Around 1:45 p.m., an RCMP officer noticed the out of control ATV travelling northbound on Deerfoot Trail.
The Calgary Police HAWCS helicopter coordinated ground units.
City police then followed her from a distance with their lights on.
It’s believed the woman exited the busy freeway on the Southland Drive off ramp before rolling and landing on a bicycle path.
She was rushed to hospital in life-threatening-condition, but is now stable.
Police are still investigating what happened and the motivation behind it.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says it appears RCMP and CPS officers involved took actions to keep the woman safe.
ASIRT is reviewing videos from HAWCS and the RCMP vehicle that first located the woman.
It’s standard protocol for ASIRT to investigate when there is a collision in the presence of police.
