A chara, – The International Trade Committee of the European Parliament (INTA) is finalising decisions on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal that will allow large corporations take small countries to court if their regulations protecting the public interest interfere with company profit-making.
At the same time Greece, the cradle of democracy, is being pushed out of the euro, which in effect means out of Europe, by unnamed creditors, based on reasons that are flawed and change every day.

Sir, – Many of us who toiled through Virgil's Aeneid II back in the day will remember the phrase Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes (Beware of Greeks baring gifts) in relation to the wooden horse of Troy.
One cannot but wonder whether the European troika of the IMF, ECB, EC is itself now presenting a wooden horse to the Greeks? As we well know this troika has previously shown a capacity for allowing a contortion of the rules of capitalism (all reward but no risk).
Who knows the truth but one cannot but commend the Greek government for asking its own citizens for their view via a referendum.
