Startup Weekend to focus on FinTech industry

By

Startup Weekend Australia is set, later this week, to launch its first sector-specific event, focusing on nurturing innovation in the financial technology (FinTech) industry.

The Startup Weekend FinTech event – supported by national sponsor and accounting software provider Intuit - will take place from 27 to 29 March in Melbourne and provide an educational space for entrepreneurs to learn more about launching startups within the fast-growing FinTech industry.

Darcy Naunton, Startup Weekend Australia leader, General Partner of Adventure Capital and Co-Founder of the York Butter Factory co-working space, said with Intuit QuickBooks Online as the national sponsor, Startup Weekend had the capacity to run events which provide entrepreneurs with the necessary resources to learn how to build a startup in 54 hours.

“The FinTech industry is home to some of the best talent in the world and in Australia, so we expect to see some exciting ideas come out of this event.”

Managing Director of Intuit Australia, Nicolette Maury, said Intuit is proud to be supporting the next wave of FinTech innovation and is committed to being part of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Australia.

“Intuit has been innovating the FinTech industry for more than 30 years by constantly seeking ways to deliver solutions to key business problems including streamlining financial management processes. In addition, we’ve acquired two Aussie startups – Fifo and invitco – to deliver best in class solutions to our customers.”

Stuart Stoyan, Founder and CEO of MoneyPlace, an innovative peer to peer lending platform, said initiatives like Startup Weekend are critical to helping entrepreneurs sharpen their ideas for improving financial services, and ultimately succeed in a highly complex sector.

“Financial services play a major role in the local economy but the sector is ripe for disruption and screaming out for new solutions that provide a better value proposition to customers. While the Australian FinTech industry is in its infancy, the maturing US industry is providing great inspiration for our market. It’s clear there is a massive opportunity for Aussie startups to make an impact both here and overseas.”

The Startup Weekend FinTech event is part of a national series of more than 24 Startup Weekends set to be held across 12 locations over this year, all supported by Intuit QuickBooks Online.
