A FOOTBALLER is being hunted by police after failing to appear in court yesterday on domestic abuse charges.

Former Kilmarnock player David Cox, 25, was due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court accused of assault, threatening behaviour and damage to property.

But Cox, who now plays for League One Peterhead, was not in court when the case was called.

His legal representative Andy Iles told Sheriff Carole Cunninghame he could offer no explanation for Cox’s non-appearance.

Sheriff Cunninghame granted a warrant to apprehend Cox.

Yesterday’s hearing was a procedural stage in a case which is due to go to trial on November 20. The warrant means that Cox, from Lanark, will face arrest by police unless he contacts the court to offer a reason for his no-show.

He faces three charges relating to an alleged incident on August 16 this year at an address in Cleland, near Motherwell.

It is claimed the father of one assaulted his ex-partner Kerry McFarlane by pushing her and pinning her to a sofa.

It is further alleged he behaved in a threatening manner, having entered the property uninvited.

The charge states that he placed Kerry “in a state of fear and alarm for her safety”. And he is also accused of damaging a door by punching it.

The court continued the case until the planned trial date.

A legal source said: “His best course of action is to get in touch before this warrant is executed to offer an explanation”

Earlier this month, Cox spoke to the Daily Record of his mental health issues and history of self-harming.

He revealed he had been suffering since his teenage years and had recently been feeling the pressure of his parents splitting up and his own relationship problems.

He said that he was now building up a business as a fitness instructor and personal trainer.
