HIGH POINT, N.C. — A team of Home Depot volunteers from across the Piedmont hopes to show High Point veterans that they’re not forgotten.

Twenty Home Depot employees from Burlington, High Point, Winston-Salem and Greensboro stores are working to renovate the grounds of a non-profit veterans home in High Point called Vet Safety Net.

William Saunders, assistant store manager at High Point’s Home Depot, said it’s a cause near to his heart, as his dad is a veteran,

“It means a lot to me, anytime I can do something to help,” he said. “We can give back to a community that gave so much to us.”

Vet Safety Net, operated by Caring Services, Inc., provides housing to 14 previously homeless veterans while also providing drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

The “Team Depot” volunteers plan to install a walkway, plant flowerbeds and shrubs, build a bench and outdoor patio, and create a fire pit for the Veteran Safety Net residents to enjoy. The goal is to provide a communal gathering space for residents.

“If you think about the military, how they operate,” Saunders said, “it’s normally in group settings. If you look around at how this is set up now, there’s not really enough space to let them be a group together.”

Gattis Long, the Veterans Case Manager at Vet Safety Net, and a former participant of the program, said they’re thrilled to be the beneficiary of Home Depot’s work.

“It’s very humbling, we’re very grateful to have Home Depot,” he said. “To know that someone cares about the veterans — gives us hope that we can do better.”

The volunteer project is part of a nationwide program of Home Depot’s called “Celebration of Service.” This is the fourth year for the program and each year Home Depot employees nationwide aim to renovate 1,000 homes.

Home Depot volunteers worked on the inside of the Vet Safety Net building last year. This year, their work is solely outside. Its value is estimated at $6,000.
