Steve Ruffner, President and Regional General Manager of KB Home Southern California joined us with details about the Double ZeroHouse, WaterSense and Energy Star. Dubbed the “Double ZeroHouse” for its dual emphasis on energy and water efficiency, the home is equipped to recycle drainwater on-site and reuse it for landscaping, minimizing the home’s overall demand for new water and eliminating the need for freshwater for its landscaping. KB Home estimates that the Double ZeroHouse 2.0 can conserve potentially 150,000 gallons of water each year when compared to a typical resale home. Greywater is defined as wastewater generated from wash hand basins, showers and baths, which can be recycled on-site for uses such as landscape irrigation. KB Home’s Double’ ZeroHouse is the first production home in the country equipped with a greywater recycling system. This feature captures water that flows down drains from showers, sinks, and washing machines and then treats that water to near-drinkable quality to irrigate the home’s landscaping. By utilizes California friendly plants that use less water and are drought tolerant homeowners can significantly reduce their water usage Additionally, drip irrigation and weather based irrigation controllers that allow for more accurate and efficient irrigation. Drip irrigation dispenses water directly to the plant root with little waste and weather bases irrigations controllers automatically adjust the schedule and amount of water in response to changing weather conditions. Not only does this save water by reducing unnecessary watering, it allows you to tailor irrigation to meet your landscape’s specific plant and climate needs.
