Sharp fall in price paid to milk producers

The price paid to Finnish dairy farmers for raw milk may fall by about 12.5% at the start of February. Among the factors pushing prices down is the continuing ban by Russia on imports of dairy products from the EU.

According to the Valio dairy farmers' cooperatives group, as of the beginning of next month, milk producers will get 35 cents per litre for raw milk, down from the around 40 cents per litre currently being paid.

Ari Mäkelä, CEO of Tuottajain Maito, a member cooperative of the Valio group, told Yle that he expects the same cut in prices to be seen nationwide. The CEO of Pohjolan Maito, a dairy cooperative in northern Finland confirmed that his organization has also made a decision to lower producer prices.

The continuing ban by Russia on imports of dairy products from the EU, lower world prices for refined dairy products, and a fall in consumer spending power in Finland have all contributed to pressures for a cut in the price paid to producers.
