Dow Chemical director: Health affects 'every aspect' of business success

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI — The nation's obesity epidemic and other health concerns are not just problems for the medical community, they're problems for the business community.

That's what Dr. Catherine Baase, global director of health services for The Dow Chemical Co., shared with a crowd of businesswomen and men during a recent Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce Percolator Breakfast meeting at Horizons Conference Center, 6200 State.

McCullom Lake residents settle cancer suit against chemical company

More than 30 people recently settled lawsuits accusing Rohm and Haas, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Co., of causing a cluster of brain cancers in the McCullom Lake, Illinois area, according to a chicagotribune.com report.

Amy Wilson elected Dow Chemical's corporate secretary

MIDLAND, MI — Amy Wilson has been elected corporate secretary by The Dow Chemical Co. Board of Directors, effective Feb. 1, and has been named assistant general counsel.

She replaces Charles Kalil in the role, who will continue as executive vice president and general counsel, according to a Dow news release. Wilson reports to Kalil.

Delta College Chemical Process Fast Start Training session begins Feb. 16

FRANKENLUST TOWNSHIP, MI — Officials with Dow Chemical Co., Dow Corning Corp. and Hemlock Semiconductor, in collaboration with Delta College and Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works, offer a Chemical Process Fast Start Training session beginning Monday, Feb. 16.

The 13-week, 520-hour accelerated training program is designed to prepare people for careers as chemical process operators, according to a news release.

Gregory Freiwald retiring as Dow Chemical executive; Johanna Soderstrom to replace him

MIDLAND, MI — Dow Chemical Co. recently announced Gregory Freiwald, chief human resources officer of aviation and corporate affairs, is retiring after 35 years with the company, and Johanna Söderström is taking on his responsibilities.

Freiwald officially retires at the end of March 2015, according to a Dow news release.

Dow Chemical names Deborah Borg president of Dow USA

MIDLAND, MI — Deborah Borg has been named president of Dow USA, officials with The Dow Chemical Co. recently announced.

In her new role, Borg, who will continue to be based in Midland, is responsible for coordinating Dow's activities across the United States and will develop and oversee a strategy for Dow USA, according to a news release.

Dow Chemical selling two 'non-strategic' assets, will net $225 million

MIDLAND, MI — Officials with The Dow Chemical Co. have signed definitive agreements to sell the company's global sodium borohydride business to Vertellus Specialty Materials LLC and its polyolefin films plant in Findlay, Ohio, to Valfilm North America Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of VALGROUP Packaging Solutions, according to a news release.

Both transactions are expected to close in the first quarter of 2015, pending regulatory approvals, the release states. Combined proceeds from the transactions total approximately $225 million.
