COLUMBUS, Ind. and KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (PRWEB) February 27, 2015

Cummins Inc. CMI and Tangent Energy Solutions are partnering to bundle clean diesel and natural gas generators with a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), aimed at helping commercial and industrial customers manage energy consumption on the grid while reducing their costs.

The partnership of Cummins, a global power leader that manufactures, distributes and services diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies, and Tangent, a leading provider of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), will make it easier for customers to dispatch generators during times of peak demand when costs on the energy grid are higher.

eDGegen™ — powered by Cummins® consists of a Cummins clean diesel or natural gas engine equipped with a suite of integrated technology and managed services provided by Tangent. The DERMS technology platform, Tangent AMP™, predicts and alerts customers ahead of peak demand periods and other economic opportunities on the energy grid. The managed service, Demand Design PLUS™, activates generator power and/or demand management strategies when energy grid capacity and prices are at their peak.

"As the energy grid becomes more decentralized, our customers are being presented with more and more ways to improve their overall energy economics," said Satish Jayaram, director, Cummins Energy Ventures. "We wanted to enable our customers to take advantage of these opportunities and Tangent's proven technology, C&I customer experience and energy market expertise made them the ideal partner to provide turnkey solutions."

Market factors, including power plant retirements and lower natural gas prices, are predicted to increase the industry's reliance on customer-side energy resources to provide power and balance volatility on the energy grid. This shift toward the "grid edge" creates more economic opportunities for customers who are equipped to recognize and respond to market signals. At the same time, these opportunities cannot interfere with the normal operation of customers' energy systems.

"Cummins is a visionary company that understands the future is not just an engine sale, but an energy solution sale," said Dean Musser, president and CEO of Tangent. "Providing a world-class engine that is supported by Cummins and coupled with Tangent DERM technology and market expertise creates a powerful economic opportunity for commercial and industrial customers."

The eDGegen™ — powered by Cummins® product line consists of four generator-DERMS integrated power platforms ranging from 750 kW to 2.0 MW. These systems are designed to reduce customer capacity charges and other costs that arise during periods of peak energy demand or when premium charges apply. eDGegen™ — powered by Cummins® will be rolled out to customers primarily through Tangent's growing network of energy retailer and municipal utility partners who have an interest in reducing demand peaks and better integrating with customer assets.
