Police: Suspect Arrested in Series of House Burglaries

A Silver Spring man has been arrested for committing 4 burglaries in Wheaten and for an assault during one of the robberies.

Melvin Calix, 21, of the 11400 block of Monterrey Dr., Silver Spring was arrested on Feb. 18 for committing four burglaries and for an assault that he committed during one of those burglaries, according to Montgomery County Police.

Since January, detectives have been investigating a series of residential burglaries in Wheaten. Each of these burglaries occurred at night and entry into the homes was through unlocked doors or windows. Residents were home and sleeping at the time of the burglaries, according to Montgomery County Department of Police.

Calix was charged in four Wheaten area burglaries:

  1. Overnight hours of Jan. 18 to Jan. 19, 11500 block of Grandview Ave., Silver Spring. Several items were taken from the residence.
  2. Jan. 19 at about 4:30 a.m., 2900 block of Dawson Ave., Silver Spring. The victim awoke to the sound of footsteps and observed the suspect in the kitchen. The suspect fled from the home with property.
  3. Feb.1 at about 2:34 a.m., block of Coronada Pl., Silver Spring. The suspect entered one of the bedrooms and assaulted one of the residents.
  4. Feb. 12 at about 12:10 a.m., 11300 block of College View Dr., Silver Spring. The suspect fled from the home when he was interrupted by a homeowner who was returning to the residence.

According to Montgomery County Police, detectives began to focus on Calix as a suspect based on evidence and leads developed during the investigation.

On Feb. 18, detectives arrested Calix on the strength of an arrest warrant and executed a search warrant at his residence. In the home, investigators located items stolen from the burglarized homes. During police questioning, Calix made statements implicating himself in these crimes.

Calix was transported to the Central Processing Unit and was charged with numerous crimes to include burglary, theft, and assault, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police.
