Happy 100th birthday, Irene Meher!

Irene Meher will celebrate her 100th birthday on May 24. She was born on May 24, 1915, to George and Ruby Whetsell in Cain Creek, a logging town in West Virginia. Irene has two sisters, Mildred and Wilma.

She married Bernard Jennings in 1932. The couple had three children: Lawrence, Lucille and Johnny. The couple lived in Uniontown, Pa., and Salem. In 1968, they moved to Hancocks Bridge. Bernard and Irene were married for 57 years before he died.

Irene worked for J.C. Penney in Salem for 40 years. She retired in May 1992.

She married her second husband, Lou Meher, in 1992, when she was 77 and he was 81. The couple spent their retirement in Hancocks Bridge and Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Irene now lives with her daughter Lucille and son-in-law Hershel Garrison, and they split their time between Millville and LaBelle, Fla.

She enjoys reading, needlework, crafting and card club. She attributes her longevity to drinking lots of coffee.
