The North Carolina police officer who unsuccessfully sued Starbucks after spilling a free cup of coffee on himself thought he was doing the moral thing by taking the coffee giant to court.

“We teach our kids we have to do the right thing. We felt it was the right thing to make Starbucks accountable for what happened that day,” Raleigh police Lt. Matthew Kohr told Inside Edition in an exclusive interview.

The law enforcement officer claimed he sustained third-degree burns on his inner thigh when a Starbucks coffee cup lid popped off and the cup folded in on itself at a Raleigh Starbucks in January 2012.

He sued for $50,000 in damages and another $700,000 in pain and suffering, saying the stress of the scalds intensified his Crohn’s disease, forcing him to undergo surgery to remove part of his intestine.

A judge last week ruled in Starbucks’ favor.

“I just wanted everyone to understand where we were coming from,” Kohr said in his sit-down with Inside Edition, which will air Tuesday night.

“I thought the facts were going to speak for themselves. I thought we presented a good case and I felt good about it, and when the verdict came out, we were disappointed.”
