Big 5 Sporting Goods literally broke ground on Skyway Monday morning, so PG&E could work on the gas lines leading to their new location across from Maxwell Drive.

Skyway was reduced to one lane in the northbound direction between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. while the crew worked.

Ginno Construction was hired to oversee the building of the new Big 5 location, and Ginno Construction Superintendant Evan Carr said the project is expected to be completed by this fall.

The utility work didn’t disturb any local businesses or homes near Maxwell, Carr said, because PG&E worked on a hot tap, or live line. He added that PG&E knows what they are doing though, so residents driving past on Monday needn’t be concerned.

At the new site, Ginno demolished one mobile home on the property last Friday, and had four employees removing asbestos from the second home on Monday. Carr said the second home will be demolished Tuesday. After completing that, crews will begin grading the land, pouring the foundation, constructing the storm drains and putting in the frame of the future building.
