NEWARK — Attention Newark soccer players: an indoor soccer field may soon be coming to the Ironbound.

East Ward councilman Augusto Amador said the funding for the construction of Hayes Park East will soon go the city council for a vote.

Located on the 500th block of Ferry Street, the project calls for an indoor soccer field, an all purpose football field, a playground and a skateboard park, according to Amador.

The five-million project, funded by a grant from the Hess Corporation, will be developed by Z-Tech Contracting LLC, Amador said.

"This is going to be a dream come true to the soccer community in the Ironbound," he said.

The project had to be approved by New Jersey's Department of Community Affairs, Amador said. Under the city's latest transitional aid agreement with the state, state officials have to be consulted on issues related to professional services, tax agreements, and or the creation of new public services.

"The [Baraka] administration worked very hard to make sure the state approved the waiver," Amador said.

State officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Amador said construction could begin as early as the end of next month.
