A man was killed last Friday when he was struck by a train in Mishawaka.

Police report that the man intentionally walked onto the tracks as the the train was coming.

Police were originally called to the Norfolk Southern Railroad Crossing at Smith Street around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian struck by a train near the Smith Street crossing.

When officers arrived on scene they found a 61-year-old man in between the rails of the north tracks, east of the Smith Street crossing.

A coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene. After an autopsy was conducted the St. Joseph County Coroner found the man died of blunt force trauma and ruled his death a suicide.

Several railroad crossings were closed from Union Street to Hendrick until 5 this evening.
