Brewing up a new plan: SABMiller unveils global strategy as it goes in search for illusive growth - and female beer drinkers

SABMiller said its interest in buying Dutch rival Heineken was not merely a defensive moved aimed at protecting itself from a takeover.

Speaking as he launched a global strategy for the brewing giant yesterday, boss Alan Clark made his first public comments since last month’s news that Heineken had rejected his bid approach, adding it was ‘not unusual’ to be in talks about a deal.

SABMiller ‘will continue to be assertive and search for growth’, he added at an investor seminar.

Clark wants to cut costs and concentrate on the highest growth opportunities, including persuading diners to choose beer to accompany a meal and attracting more female drinkers.

 

SAB’s shares slipped yesterday 7.5p to 3375p.
