Crime Roundup: Suspect substitutes mobile phone for handgun

iPhone cases like this one listed for sale on Amazon have been the target of advisories by law enforcement agencies nationwide.

A would-be robber used a mobile phone as a stand-in for a handgun while attempting to take a woman’s money around 12:25 p.m. on Friday.

The victim made the report at Kinston Department of Public Safety headquarters.

“She advised them that she was in a parking lot at 112 E. Gordon St., and a suspect approached her with his shirt pulled over his face and an object under his shirt,” KDPS spokesman Woody Spencer said. “(The victim) stated the suspect advised her he had a gun, and to give him money. (The victim) explained she didn’t have any money, and that she needed to leave.

“(The victim) stated the suspect continued to tell her to give him money and that he would kill her if she did not. (The victim) advised at that point she realized it was not a gun, but it was a cell phone. It was then she turned her vehicle toward him and began driving. (The victim) then advised the suspect disappeared from the scene.”

The victim described the suspect as a black male in his early teens wearing a brown shirt and on a bicycle.

Bicycle thief threatens to shoot victim

Police responded to 511 N. Queen St. around 5:30 p.m. Friday to a robbery.

“The victim advised officers the suspect grabbed his bicycle while (he) was walking with it and stole it,” KDPS spokesman Woody Spencer said. “(The victim) stated that the suspect threatened to shoot him while he was stealing the bicycle.”

The bike was described as a $50 blue Pro Rider model with a black rear rim and a chrome front rim.

Man mugged for more than $1,000

Officers arrived in the 400 block of South Queen Street around 4 p.m. Saturday to a robbery call.

“(The victim) was very unclear about what happened and advised he did not speak much English,” KDPS spokesman Woody Spencer said. “(The victim) advised he had been attacked by an unknown number of suspects. Before he got away, he got help. He also had a small cut under his eye and blood on his shirt.

“When the second officer arrived, the victim advised him that he was attacked and the suspects stole $1,200. (The victim) continued to point toward a door at 413 S. Queen St., and pointed at a door at 415 S. Queen St. and continued to switch back and forth between doors.”

There were no immediate suspects.

Woman seen drinking had gun, marijuana

A woman at the Neuseway Nature Park allegedly began to leave after drinking in a public area, resulting in a vehicle stop Saturday shortly before 7 a.m.

“An officer responded to assist a wildlife officer – the wildlife officer advised he saw the suspect drinking from a liquor container on Slaughter Pen Road,” KDPS spokesman Woody Spencer said. “The wildlife officer then stated he saw the suspect drive from Slaughter Pen Road and initiated a vehicle stop in the 100 block of West Caswell Street.

“An officer got consent from the suspect to search the vehicle. He started searching the vehicle and the suspect advised of a handgun in the glove compartment and said it was locked, but it was not locked. The wildlife officer asked the suspect if she had a firearm during initial contact and the suspect said she did not have any firearms in the vehicle. The (police) officer found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the center console.”

Shanequa Mona Evans, 24, received misdemeanor counts of possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and possession of marijuana paraphernalia and cited for failing to notify a public officer of a concealed weapon while registered for a concealed carry permit.

The marijuana, a $400 Smith & Wesson SW9VE 9 mm handgun and 10 Luger bullets valued at $6 were seized at the scene.
