Manhattan’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza is now the Comcast Building, cable giant Comcast, owner of NBCUniversal, said Thursday.
The name change took effect Wednesday night as new granite pier naming stones were unveiled and the company’s new rooftop signage in the form of the Comcast NBCUniversal logo was illuminated.
The company said the signage features the company’s logo on the north- and south-facing roof exteriors and the NBC peacock on the western-facing rooftop facade. This marks the first time in history that the iconic NBC peacock logo appears atop the network’s historic headquarters.
The date had historic significance. On July 1, 1941, 30 Rockefeller Plaza was home to the first commercial TV broadcast by WNBC, then known as WNBT.
Comcast Building is the building’s third name. RCA, which founded the NBC network, had its name atop the building starting in 1937. The building was renamed for GE in 1988. In 2013, Comcast purchased from GE the space used by NBCUniversal at 30 Rock. But, until Wednesday night, GE’s iconic logo remained atop 30 Rock. NBC Nightly News aired the below footage, showing off the building’s new name, on Wednesday night.
