DIA extends hours for final days of 'Diego and Frida'

As "Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit" enters its final days, the Detroit Institute of Arts is extending hours for the popular exhibition to accommodate a rush at the finish line.

The exhibition will remain open until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday — and if demand is great enough, the museum will stay open even later on Sunday, the show's official closing day.

In addition to extended hours for the Rivera and Kahlo show, the entire DIA also will stay open until 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. After 7 p.m. most galleries will close, but the Impressionist galleries will remain open until 10 p.m.

Attendance at "Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit" has been strong, though it's well shy of record territory. As of the end of the day Tuesday, the show had attracted more than 156,000 visitors. That's good enough for seventh place in DIA history, trailing "The Age of Revolution" (1975) with 163,166 and "Degas and the Dance" (2002) with 171,000.

With a gangbuster finish, the Rivera and Kahlo exhibition could leapfrog past Degas to fifth place all-time.

The best-attended DIA show ever is "Van Gogh: Face to Face" (1999) with 315,000 visitors.

The other top shows are "Splendors of Ancient Egypt" (1997) at 300,000, "Diego Rivera: A Retrospective" (1986) at 228,000 and "Rembrandt After 300 Years" (1970) at 194,198.

Tickets: Adults: $14 Wednesday-Friday; $19 Saturday-Sunday. Ages 6-17: $9. 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit. 313-833-4005. www.dia.org.
