A San Francisco Public Utilities Commission work crew digging in the city’s Sunset District hit a small gas line and caused a leak this afternoon, a SFPUC spokeswoman said.
PG&E had nearly completed repairs as of shortly after 5:30 p.m. and the SFPUC crew remained in the area to fill in the hole once they were done, SFPUC spokeswoman Alison Kastama said.
The SFPUC crews were repairing a 2-inch water irrigation line near the corner of 47th Avenue and Taraval Street when they hit the half-inch plastic gas line, according to PUC and PG&E officials.
The break happened at about 2:15 p.m. and caused flames to briefly shoot into the air, but did not spark a fire or cause any damage or injuries, according to the fire department.
The 3700 block of Taraval Street was briefly evacuated as a result of the break, but the flow of gas has since been stopped, a fire official said.
Kastama said SFPUC digging crews routinely mark gas service lines when doing digging work but it appears this time the two pipes were a little closer together than expected.
The gas line services one home in the area, which had service shut off during repairs, according to PG&E.
