Ann Coulter Book Signing Turns Chaotic After Protesters Show Up, Rip Up Her Book

An Ann Coulter book signing in Costa Mesa, California earlier this week did not go as planned. Coulter visited a Barnes & Noble in the city to sign copies of her new book, Adios, America: The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country Into a Third-World Hellhole, and she had some people arrive at the store that did not agree with her views on Mexicans and illegal immigrants, according to the Orange County Register.

The book signing began at around 6 p.m. on Wednesday night, and Ann Coulter did not plan to speak at the event. She was there to sign books for those that arrived. However, 100 protesters arrived at the scene. During the event, protesters carried signs and ripped up one of her books.

What about the book angered people? Media Matters shared a bit about Coulter’s new book, Adios, America.

“In her book, Coulter calls immigrants ‘criminal[s]’ and argues that immigration is a ‘war technique’ to change America. In the past, Coulter has described immigrants as ‘people from backward, primitive cultures,’ and said that immigrants are a bigger threat to America than ISIS.”

Gabriel San Roman, a reporter for the OC Weekly, was one of the people in attendance at the event, and he shared his view of the chaos that took place. He did manage to have a moment to speak with Ann when he reached the signing table.

“Finally, my turn came to approach Coulter. She seemed bubbly at first. ‘Why didn’t you do a talk?’ I asked. ‘There’s no space and I thought it’d be better to have more people line up to get their book signed,’ she replied while signing my copy. ‘So, how many Mexicans do you get at your signings?’ I asked next. ‘There’s some that come through,’ Coulter said. ‘About 20 percent is what the polls say!’ she added, noting the number of GOP Hispanic. ‘But I’m like the only Mexican here today,’ I said. ‘That’s not 20 percent!’ It finally dawned on Coulter that she dealt with a foe, not a fan. ‘This isn’t a question and answer session,’ she scolded. Barnes & Noble staff scooted the next person in front of me, saying I needed to leave, allowing others who had their book signed to linger.”

After the media began to cover the event and the protesters, San Roman edited his news report with some more thoughts about the book signing. He wanted to clear up some of the reports because he felt that some of the media was wrong in their coverage.

“Coulter told me that there was never any lecture planned–just the signing. And with all this supposed chaos, there would have been a couple arrests, no? But private security and Costa Mesa police didn’t detain a single person. They just made sure that a clear path remained at the entrance and exit to the bookstore. Activists cleaned up every last scrap of Coulter’s torn apart book from the floor. The clincher? A cop took a group photo of the demonstrators before they parted their separate ways.”

Coulter did speak out about the book signing and the protesters that showed up at the book signing event with Breitbart News.

“You have to understand, screaming and defacing things is how Latin Americans express disagreement. At least as long as they were destroying books and screaming in a book store, they weren’t molesting any 4-year-olds.”

Coulter has been out promoting her new book in recent days. She appeared on The Kelly File on Tuesday, and Geraldo Rivera joined her to debate Donald Trump’s recent comments about immigration. Trump has come under fire for his comments about illegal aliens. After his comments were made, NBC ended their partnership with Donald Trump and Macy’s parted ways with the man, who is now running for President of the United States. According to Salon, Rivera and Coulter also spoke about her book during the broadcast. Rivera made it clear that he did not agree with the way Coulter viewed things.

“This is an insult that — I won’t use the term ‘racist,’ because I don’t think Ann’s a racist. What she is is a polemicist, and she’s written a screed, a diatribe. She had a point she wanted to make and in her very sharp and witty writing, she’s made it.”

Ann Coulter did share more of her views about illegal immigration after a woman was killed by a man on Wednesday. News reports revealed that the man had been sent back to Mexico five times before he killed a woman walking with her father in San Francisco. According to Biz Pac Review, Coulter shared some statements on her Twitter on Friday.

Coulter did receive some support for her comments. One Twitter user called her comments “spot on” in a tweet.
