Keep govt. out of marriage

To the Editor:

While the Supreme Court correctly ruled that laws regulating marriage licenses must be applied equally to all citizens as per the 14th Amendment, this is still the wrong approach. Government should not be involved in marriage to begin with.

Of all the presidential candidates who have spoken up after the recent court decision, only one has consistently advocated for true freedom to marry. That candidate is Rand Paul.

Paul has long advocated that individuals should be free to marry without begging for permission from the government. This latest decision just continues the practice of begging (and paying a tax) the government for permission to be married. Marriage is nothing more than a contract and the only involvement government should have in a contract is enforcing the contract’s provisions if one party fails to adhere to those provisions.

As it stands now there are over 1,000 federal laws regarding marriage that one must follow. That number should be zero.

I urge you to support true freedom to marry by supporting Paul and his idea ending government involvement in marriage. Because in the end, just like it is none of the government’s business who you text, call, or email, it is none of the government’s business who you marry.
