A plane that departed from Northern California with dozens of passengers on board landed safely at LAX Monday despite being unable to deploy some of its landing gear, officials said.
The SkyWest Airlines plane with 43 people aboard reported “problems” as it approached the airport to land at about 8:30 a.m., LAX spokeswoman Katherine Alvarado confirmed.
The jet was unable to extend its left main landing gear before landing on runway 24L, Ian Gregor with the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The plane came to a stop with the landing gear still retracted and was immediately surrounded by emergency personnel, aerial video from Sky5 showed.
Passengers exiting the plane were placed on buses, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Everyone safely exited the aircraft, Los Angeles International Airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said in a statement.
The captain of the plane did not report any injuries, according to Gregor.
SkyWest flight 5316, on a Canadair Regional Jet 200, was being operated as United Express on its route from Monterey to Los Angeles International Airport, Castles said.
The aircraft was cleared by the National Transportation Safety Board to be removed from the runway, and that was completed about 2:30 p.m. according to Castles. The runway reopened about 3:30 p.m., she said.
Airline mechanics planned to inspect the aircraft to try to determine what caused the problem.
There were no major impacts to airport operations, though four United Airlines flights were delayed and one was canceled, Castles said. An Aeromexico flight from Mexico City was diverted to Tijuana.
