A commando, attached to the state’s Internal Security Division, was killed and another injured after a gun was accidently triggered at the Centre for Counter Terrorism campus at Agara on Thursday. The commando whose gun allegedly misfired was booked for culpable homicide.

Around 9 a.m., the stand-by Garuda force were headed from CTC to KSRP Armoury nearby to deposit the arms at the end of their duty, said the police. However, while most had unloaded their weapons, one bullet was left unseen in the gun belonging to Rajashekhar. Just as their vehicle was leaving the CTC, the gun was accidentally triggered, said Rohini Katoch Sepat, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East).

The bullet pierced through the seat and struck Mahadev Swamy (30). Amar Kumar Pandey, Additional Director General of Police (ISD) said the bullet even went through Mr. Swamy’s body and struck a lady officer, Manjula, who was sitting behind him.

Mr. Swamy died during treatment, while the lady officer was discharged with minor injuries. The deceased had been with ISD – which deals with cases of terrorism, coastal security and left-wing extremism in the state – for the past five years. Mr. Swamy, a resident of Chamrajanagara district, was deputed to the ISD from City Armed Reserve (North), said Mr. Pandey.

“We have launched an inquiry into the incident to find out whether it was human error or due to malfunctioning of the weapon,” he said.

Meanwhile, the HSR Layout police have filed a case against Rajashekhar under IPC 304a for causing death due to “rash or negligent” act.
