DirecTV is upping the heat by $46 million in its lawsuit against Qatar-backed Al Jazeera America, according to a report.
A June 11 court filing previously under seal reveals that DirecTV is trying to amend its suit against Al Jazeera America to include the results of audits uncovered in the discovery phase, said the Hollywood Reporter.
The suit, which had been demanding $28.5 million, is now claiming $74.5 million in claimed damages, the Hollywood Reporter says, adding that the filing reveals that DirecTV will no longer be obligated to pay for Al Jazeera America after July 31.
Al Jazeera America was created when its parent company bought Al Gore’s Current TV in January 2013.
Because cable and satellite distributors had “most favored nation” deals with Current TV, Al Jazeera was required to offer the same licensing terms to them. DirecTV is suing Al Jazeera America with allegations it never got such an offer, the report says.
