MGM Resorts Considering Atlanta for $1 Billion Casino

To build it, casino gambling would need to be first legalized in Georgia.

MGM Resorts International is considering building a $1 billion casino resort in downtown Atlanta, according to an Atlanta Business Chronicle news report. Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Savannah) told the Atlanta Business Chronicle that the casino would create 3,500 jobs.

But casino gambling is presently illegal in Georgia. While some Georgia lawmakers support legalizing casino gambling, Gov. Nathan Deal does not support legalization, according to Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Rep. Stephens and three other representatives took steps to try to prompt legalization by introducing a constitutional amendment, House Bill 677, to ask Georgia voters to authorize a limited number of casino resorts in the state. The legislation was introduced past the date for action during the 2015 General Assembly session, but it will be active starting in January 2016, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported.
