Kingsport-based Eastman Chemical Company announced a partnership with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Monday.
The multi-year agreement will involve Eastman and UTK working together on research in several areas including neutron science and addictive manufacturing.
As part of the agreement, Eastman will provide $750,000 in funding over three years to support the research endeavors.
“It allows the University of Tennessee to leverage the capabilities that they have internally, both in terms of people and equipment, provide solutions that we can then with great speed take to the marketplace to provide practical solutions to our customer base,” Steve Crawford, Eastman Senior Vice President, said.
UT Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek said the new partnership will heighten the opportunities for the university’s faculty and students.
“Combining the mind power of UT and Eastman – both proven research powerhouses – has the ability to yield scientific advances with practical applications that will make our world a better place,” Cheek said.
The University of Tennessee marks the third academic partnership in Eastman’s Network.
The others are with North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
According to a news release, Eastman is expected to issue its first call for research proposals from UTK later this summer and will select the initial class of projects for funding this fall.
