Samsung Gear smartwatch: circular display is visible in new teaser

Samsung Electronics has been earlier rumored to be developing a circular smartwatch named Gear A with Bluetooth and 3G support to its current smartwatch portfolio. The Korean tech giant has now released a teaser image showing off a rounded weather-themed watch face, along with a list of apps from major partners, including CNN, Yelp, Baidu, FidMe and Apposter.

Samsung is the most prolific smartwatch maker and presently offers six different models, but is yet to come up with a circular smartwatch. The phone maker was earlier rumored to be working on a device codenamed Orbis and has promised that its upcoming smartwatch would be an ultimate all-in-one device and 'the perfect smartwatch.'

Earlier reports had suggested that Samsung would launch Orbis as Gear A, a round-faced smartwatch that would be available in two variants - with 3G connectivity and Bluetooth for connecting to a smartphone, though both models were likely to support Wi-Fi. The 3G model of Gear A has been speculated to have wrist-based calling feature and allow the wearer to make and receive calls without the need for a synced smartphone, similar to LG's Watch Urbane LTE.

Samsung has now issued a press release announcing plans to make the Software Development Kit available for its next-gen smartwatch ahead of the official unveiling of the wearable. The company's blog post also contain a teaser image of a smartwatch with a round face as well as apps with a round UI from major partners like CNN, Yelp and Baidu.

There are no details available about the operating system of the Samsung Gear A, though the device should run Android Wear like the other models since it offers 3G connectivity. However, Samsung's square shaped smartwatch named Gear S with 3G connectivity runs on the company's preferred Tizen operating system. The Gear A will be launched internationally and offered in a selection of separate guises for different global network standards.
