Holly Hall and Tess Scheidel each scored for the Middleville Thornapple Kellogg girls soccer team as it topped Wayland Union 2-0 in a district semifinal on Thursday, and set a school wins-per-season record.

The team is now 17-2-1 on the season, breaking last season's 16-win record.

Scheidel, a freshman, scored the game's final goal as a header.

"We actually moved her up for districts, so it was exciting to see a girl like that stepping up and playing well for us," Middleville Thornapple Kellogg coach Joel Strickland said.

The score was 1-0 at halftime, and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg outshot Wayland Union 20-7.

"We did a good job of controlling the game and we had a lot of opportunities," Strickland said. "We did a really good job, all the way around I felt like our girls played hard and every girl who got in the game played hard."

The team plays back-to-back state champion Richland Gull Lake in a district final on Saturday.

"They're a great team, and obviously very fast up top," Strickland said. "We faced them last year in the district finals as well and we're looking forward to seeing them again."
