American Express Co. increased Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Chenault’s pay 2.9 percent after shares of the credit-card issuer touched a record last year and profit rose, even as competition for customers intensified.

The board awarded Chenault $25.1 million for 2014, leaving him among the financial industry’s top-paid CEOs. His package includes a $2 million salary, $8.1 million bonus and $15 million in restricted stock, options and a long-term incentive, the New York-based lender said Monday in a regulatory filing. He got $24.4 million for 2013.
