At least six students of National Public School, Indiranagar suffered minor injuries on Monday after a step on a stage collapsed. The children were rehearsing for the annual sports day on Tuesday.

Fifteen students from Class Seven were on the makeshift stage in the playground practising for the ‘flip card’ event. Around 11 a.m., a step collapsed, leading to the accident.

The injured were rushed to Chinmaya Mission Hospital (CMH) and Manipal Hospital where all, except one student, were treated as out patients. The child admitted in CMH is said to be out of danger.

Recalling the incident, a student, who was taken to CMH for treatment, said, “Some students fell on other children who were standing on the next step.”

She said that it was the first day that students were practising on the stage.

K.P. Gopalkrishna, Chairman and Founder Principal of the school, admitted that the gallery was not constructed properly by the contractors leading to “minor” injuries to students. He said that the sports day, including the flip card event, would be held as per schedule.

Though a posse of policemen rushed to the school soon after the incident, the police said that no case has been registered since parents did not lodge a complaint. Asked if they would take up suo moto case against the school, an officer said that he had not received any such instruction from higher ups on this issue.
