Firefighters say Seaside crash caused 2-alarm apartment fire
The Seaside Fire Department said two teenage girls went on a joyride that crashed into several cars, broke a gas line, torn down electrical wires, drove through a building, and started a fire Wednesday night.Battalion Chief Paul Blaha said after the 14-year-old driver and her 18-year-old female passenger crashed into Seaview Village Apartments, broken gas lines and ruptures electrical wires combined into a two-alarm blaze. "It acted like a power surge," Blaha said. No one was injured, but the crash and the fire left three units uninhabitable.Jair Sanchez and his dad were out Thursday afternoon searching through what's left of their family home."We're just checking the back to see what we can save," he said.Sanchez said he has accepted the home is almost a total loss, but he wanted to see if any of their photographs were salvageable.“Memories, you know because that is something you can't replace," he said.The young man said while they have lost everything, they've also found a community ready to help them in their time of need."Red Cross is helping us out you know, and a lot of things, neighbors, friends, family, everybody, so it was nice to know that we have people there," Sanchez said.Homes were evacuated for safety when the gas lines broke, and PG&E had to be brought out to fix the mess. Blaha said PG&E in no way contributed to the fire.The girls ran from the scene, but were arrested shortly after.The names of the 18-year-old and 14-year-old have not been released, and police have released what crimes the two will be charged with.
