InterCore demos biometric driver alertness detection system for insurance company

InterCore, Inc. recently demonstrated for a major insurance company its Driver Alertness Detection System (DADS), which uses biometric monitoring to help insurers limit losses due to accidents in the transport industry.

InterCore’s demonstration program included more than 5,700 vehicles with DADS installed in them, the majority of which have been operating with the biometric monitoring system since mid-2013.

In addition to saving lives, every accident that is prevented by the use of DADS could save an insurance company millions of dollars in claims.

Under development for more than a decade, the DADS service uses biometric monitoring of 524 points of the driver’s eyes, face and head to determine when the driver’s alertness is reducing. The system then alerts the driver and selected third parties of the impending reduction of alertness.

Additionally, the system provides drivers and dispatchers with predictive alerts up to two hours before the potential onset of sleep to allow for proactive measures to be taken before the driver becomes a danger to other drivers and pedestrians.

The predictive alert feature helps to differentiate DADS from other competing alertness detection systems, which merely provide reactive actions instead of DADS’ timely preventive actions.

Intercore said the cost/benefit calculation related to the deployment of DADS in vehicles covered by any insurance company is evident, as inattentive or drowsy driving can result in accidents involving loss of life and/or significant property damage.
