Here’s What We Know About Ansonia’s Weird Water Leak

Connecticut is in the midst of a moderate drought, but water isn’t very hard to come by on Ansonia’s State Street.

In fact, it’s bubbling out of the ground out of seemingly nowhere.

The leak is near State Street’s intersection with North Main Street, between the Armory and the Valley YMCA.

The water appears, then runs downhill before most of it runs into a drain that runs across the street.

Readers, in messages and posts to the Valley Indy’s Facebook page, have been peppering the Valley Indy with questions about the liquid.

Reader Laura Sevigny‎ was the first to ask on May 20.

Anyone know what’s all over State Street in front of the Armory?,” she asked May 20. Eversourse was out there looking at it today, and there were people out there yesterday as well . .. just curious.”

You’re not alone, Laura!

City officials said Thursday they’ll have to dig up the road to figure out what the problem is.

Crews from the Regional Water Company have done testing and determined it’s not a problem on their end.

We have sampled it to make sure that it is not drinking water,” Kate Powell, a company spokeswoman, said Thursday. There’s no chlorine in it, so it’s not drinking water.”

City officials said they were in the process of scheduling work on the street.

We’re going to have to excavate and see what it is,” Mayor David Cassetti said.

Public Works Director Douglas Novak said he been getting calls from residents daily about the issue.

It’s either ground water coming off the hill or it’s a break in our drainage,” Novak said. We don’t know yet for sure.”

Novak said whatever the problem is won’t pose a danger of the road collapsing or other subterranean damage.

Officials don’t think it’s Godzilla, but won’t be able to tell for sure until they rip up the road.
