Newsweek to Release Fourth Annual Green Rankings in October

Newsweek magazine will release its fourth annual Green Rankings on Oct. 22, 2012. In collaboration with research firms Trucost and Sustainalytics, the magazine will again judge the environmental performance of the largest publicly-traded companies in the U.S. and around the world.

Published annually since 2009, the rankings provide a rigorous, cross-industry framework for comparing the environmental commitment and performance of major companies. Last year's U.S. winner was IBM, with HP, Sprint, Baxter, Dell, Johnson & Johnson, Accenture, Office Depot, CA Technologies, and Nvidia rounding out the top 10. Munich Re topped the global list.

The Green Rankings assess companies based on a variety of environmental criteria, including greenhouse-gas emissions, water withdrawal, waste, emissions, and natural-resource use, as well as on corporate policies, programs, and initiatives related to the environment. The rankings also include an assessment of each company's environmental disclosure and transparency. Our rankings comprise two lists: one that surveys the 500 biggest companies in the United States, and another of the 500 largest companies in the world (including the U.S.).

This year's rankings will be calculated using the same methodology as last year, making meaningful comparisons possible. This will facilitate the use of our scores as an environmental benchmarking tool for business.

Newsweek invites the companies we are researching (listed below) to submit any relevant company data for consideration, to review the information we've collected, and to contact us with any questions. NEW RATING OPPORTUNITY FOR SMALLER OR PRIVATE COMPANIES

Starting this year, we will be offering a rating option for companies that do not meet the inclusion criteria for our U.S. 500 or Global 500 lists, such as private companies or smaller public companies. For a research fee, we will evaluate any such company and score it using the Green Rankings methodology.
