Monday, Jan. 19

Japan releases industrial production, consumer confidence and department store sales.

U.S. stock and bond markets are closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

(8:30 a.m.) Statistics Canada releases Canada's international transactions in securities for November.

Tuesday Jan. 20

China releases fourth-quarter real GDP, December industrial production, December retail sales and December fixed asset investment.

Germany releases the ZEW survey and producer price index.

(8:30 a.m. ET) Statistics Canada releases the monthly survey of manufacturing for November and the travel between Canada and other countries for November.

(10 a.m. ET) U.S. NAHB housing market index.

Wednesday Jan. 21

Bank of Japan concludes a two-day monetary policy meeting.

(8:30 a.m.) U.S. Commerce Department releases housing starts for December. The Street expects a 1.3 per cent rise to an annualized rate of 1.042 million. Building permits data also to be released.

(8:30 a.m. ET) Statistics Canada releases the wholesale trade figures for November. It's expected to decline 0.2 per cent.

(10 a.m. ET) Bank of Canada policy announcement and monetary policy report.

(11:15 a.m. ET) Monetary policy report press conference with Bank of Canada governor Poloz and senior deputy governor Wilkins.

Euro area reports January consumer confidence while Italy releases November retail sales and industrial orders.

The European Central Bank's governing council meets to set monetary policy for the 19-country eurozone.

(8:30 a.m.) U.S. Labor Department releases weekly jobless claims. It's expected to decline 16,000 from the previous week, to 300,000.

(9 a.m. ET) FHFA house price index for the U.S. for November. It's expected to be up 4.8 per cent from a year ago.

Freddie Mac, the mortgage company, releases weekly mortgage rates (10 a.m.)

HSBC releases China manufacturing PMI for January.

Japan manufacturing PMI for January.

Euro zone releases purchasing managers indexes.

(8:30 a.m.) Statistics Canada releases the consumer price index for December and the retail trade figures for November. The CPI is expected to be up 1.7 per cent from a year ago, with core CPI up 2.1 per cent. Retail sales are expected to come in unchanged for the month.

(9:45 a.m. ET) Markit flash manufacturing PMI for January.

(10 a.m.) U.S. National Association of Realtors releases existing home sales for December. It's expected to be up 2.7 per cent to an annualized rate of 5.07 million.
