A profile of the late Rick James kicks off TV One’s newest four-episode season of Unsung on Jan. 14. Episodes featuring Peaches & Herb, Angie Stone and Meli’sa Morgan follow on consecutive Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
Members of James’ band discuss his drug addiction in this exclusive clip — specifically how he went from snorting cocaine to freebasing. Sly Stone introduced James to smoking cocaine at a time when James had an $8,000-a-week habit.
Family and friends tell the story of the man trapped inside the legend known as the King of Punk Funk, whose songs “Super Freak,” “Mary Jane” and “Bustin’ Out” defined funk in the late 1970s and early ’80s.
The other shows this season are:
“Peaches and Herb”: Herb Fame and singing partner Linda Greene take the stage after a 31-year absence to perform their classic tunes (“Shake Your Groove Thing,” “Reunited”) and sit down to reflect on their amazing career. (Jan. 21)
“Angie Stone”: After two decades of performing anonymously in groups, Angie Stone went solo in 1999 with Black Diamond and started a string of six top 20 R&B albums. (Jan. 28)
“Meli’sa Morgan”: Former background vocalist Morgan rose to stardom with sultry songs such as “Do You Still Love Me?” and Prince‘s “Do Me Baby.” After years away from the spotlight, Morgan provides a revealing look at her career. (Feb. 4)
Arthur Smith, Kent Weed and Frank Sinton of A. Smith & Co. Productions executive produce Unsung for TV One. Mark Rowland is co-executive producer and Lamar Chase is the producer.
